Excellent comment, Adam. I certainly agree that "administrative tasks" should not be considered a chore but a privilege, however the majority of our research shows that it remains a chore to most of us in music ministry. It is our desire at BCMMP to help make the shift from chore to privilege. Your comment is certainly a move in the right direction!

Thanks,
Emmett

I agree about rest being essential. But I have to take some issue with the article's discussion of "administrative" tasks as being a "chore".

Communication with the rest of the church is an essential part of integrating music ministry into the spiritual fabric of the church. It gives us the opportunity to learn about the church's vision, and how we fit into it, as members of the body. And it lets us get buy-in and feedback from others, since everyone in the congregation interacts with the music ministry at every worship service.

In particular, I find presenting the vision of the music ministry also gives me an opportunity to consolidate and firm up that vision. The process of organizing my thoughts for presentation to others takes vague ideas and turns them into concrete principles and action plans. Done prayerfully, this is a terrific spiritual exercise with direct benefits for the ministry -- and for its leader!

Finally, effective communication makes the whole ministry more effective. If the congregation understands the vision, and its Biblical basis, it enhances the "ministry" part of "music ministry". For example, before singing Hallelujah, Salvation and Glory, I read Revelation 19:1 showing how the song echoes worship in Heaven. It brings people on board with the substance who might otherwise not enjoy the style of the music.

Hope this helps someone reading. These "administrative chores" are a lot more meaningful in the Church than they are in the Dilbert cubicle farm!

I think REST is very essential to music ministry with so many task alot of times your creativity and energy is drained and you can't give your best at times. Even the birds in the sky have to land in order to fly again.
